Belgium: the emerging epicentre of sportstech innovation

Recent years have seen Belgian ultra-endurance athletes achieving incredible feats on the world stage. Their mind-blowing performances have not only captured the imagination of sports enthusiasts but have also raised an intriguing question: could Belgium's fertile tech ecosystem be a contributing factor to these successes? As a technology enthusiast, I delved into the supportive environment that surrounds these athletes and discovered a landscape rich with potential to foster even more fitness and innovation.

The fertile ground of sportstech in Belgium Belgium's sportstech ecosystem is a tapestry of cutting-edge companies, innovative startups, world-class facilities, and expert coaching, all contributing to an environment where athletic excellence can thrive.

Screening and assessment Companies like Fidlab and Easly provide advanced lab tests to help athletes assess the impact of their performance. Biometriq and Leadlife offer similar services, complemented by companion apps that deliver personalised guidance. Utilising state-of-the-art scanning tools from Tanita, Inbody, and Multiscan, organisations equip athletes with detailed insights into their physical condition, enabling them to optimise their training regimes.

Coaching and training excellence At the heart of athletic success lies quality coaching. Belgium boasts a wealth of high-calibre coaches and centres dedicated to training, healthy living, and nutritional optimisation. Notably, top athletes such as Karel Sabbe, Frederik Van Lierde, and Mathieu Bonne offer personalised training programmes, sharing their expertise to nurture the next generation of champions.

Accelerators and startup support Fueling innovation in sportstech are accelerators like SportsTech Belgium and SportUp, which specifically support international sports and technology startups. General accelerators such as Imec iStart, The Birdhouse, and Start it @KBC also play a crucial role, offering early-stage tech startups resources, networking opportunities, and mentorship. This supportive infrastructure encourages entrepreneurs to develop new solutions that enhance athletic performance and wellbeing.

Innovative startups leading the way Belgium's startup scene is vibrant and diverse, with companies pushing the boundaries of sportstech innovation. Mirror Report provides a personalised healthcare coaching platform, while Raw Stadia monitors and optimises playing fields to enhance athlete performance. OnTracx employs advanced biomechanical algorithms to quantify mechanical load during running, and Skinetix offers non-invasive wearable technology that measures muscle activity and movement. Athletin has developed a web and mobile app to monitor athletes' wellbeing, and Wobby, though not sports-specific, assists in making sense of large data sets through an AI workspace. Recognising the mental aspect of sports, BloomUp offers an all-in-one mental wellbeing platform, and Moonbird introduces the world's first handheld breathing coach to reduce anxiety and improve sleep.

World-class facilities and resorts Belgium is home to exceptional training facilities equipped with the latest technology. Resorts like Monte Marcella place athletes in the heart of the Flemish cycling mecca, offering extensive in-house training amenities at both altitude and sea level. With customisable altitude settings ranging from 0 to 4,500 metres, athletes can experience the benefits of altitude training across various facilities, including ice baths, spas, gyms, and even cinemas.

Rehabilitation and medical excellence Injuries are an inevitable part of sports, and Belgium excels in athlete recovery and rehabilitation. Centres like Movetocure and Lab Antwerp provide world-class services to get athletes back on track swiftly. The swift recoveries of athletes like Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel, who returned to competition weeks after severe injuries, highlight the effectiveness of these facilities. Moreover, Belgium's strong biotech and pharmaceutical sectors, along with a high number of clinical trials per capita, contribute significantly to advancements in sports medicine.

Belgium's potential in the global wellness economy The global wellness economy is projected to reach $9 trillion by 2028, presenting immense opportunities for economic growth. Belgium's robust sportstech ecosystem positions the country to tap into this burgeoning market. By fostering innovation and supporting startups, Belgium can not only boost its economy but also enhance the health and wellbeing of its population.

I have 10 questions As we stand on the cusp of potentially becoming a global leader in sportstech, several thought-provoking questions arise:

  1. What strategies could improve Belgium's position as a top destination for sportstech innovation on the global stage?
  2. Where should we focus our efforts to build and enhance this ecosystem further — specialised resorts, supportive regulation, interoperability, country marketing?
  3. What regulatory frameworks, data-protection laws or policies could be implemented to foster innovation and growth in Belgium's sportstech sector?
  4. How can investment be attracted to further fuel the sportstech ecosystem in Belgium?
  5. How can partnerships between universities, research institutions, and industry players be strengthened to drive innovation?
  6. Could initiatives in sportstech help reduce healthcare costs by promoting a healthier society?
  7. How can we make personalised coaching more affordable and accessible?
  8. Can our endeavours in sportstech lead to a healthier population, perhaps creating a country-sized "Blue Zone"?
  9. If we could nurture athletic potential in every citizen, what impact would that have on society?
  10. How might an increase in athletes influence competitions, media streaming (rights), and other economic opportunities?

Conclusion Belgium stands at a unique intersection of technology, coaching excellence, and world-class facilities. By addressing these questions and fostering collaboration among creatives, business developers, and innovators, we have the opportunity to solidify our position as a leader in sportstech innovation. The potential benefits — for our economy, our athletes, and the health of our population — are immense.
